Nearly every street corner in Jackson is occupied by an eatery ready to tackle your taste buds. From time honored traditions to award-winning meals and sweets that will take you back in time, if there’s something you desire, Jackson is the place to get it. Although we have plenty of Jackson specialties and treats for your sweet tooth, here are a few local favorites.
Savory
Since 1914 Jackson has been serving up our very own version of the coney dog – three years before Detroit, to be exact. At Jackson Coney Island you can get your dog topped with their secret sauce, finely diced onions, and mustard. You would think being around for more than 100 years that many things would change, but not much has and that’s just the reason it's so popular! If you want a coney dog for breakfast, you’re in luck because they serve them up all day long.
For some southern-style BBQ right here in the Midwest, look no further than West Texas Barbecue Co. Voted Best BBQ in Michigan, you can’t come to Jackson and not eat there at least once. Their rustic, down home feel is just what you’d expect from a restaurant modeled after the famous Texas roadside BBQ joints. When you order, make sure you get a side of their homemade macaroni and cheese.
With more than 100 lakes, it's only fitting that you eat lakeside at the Beach Bar. Situated right on the shore of Clark Lake, it’s the best spot to enjoy a Michigan sunset with food that’s a bit lighter. Their specialty cocktails, sandwiches, and salads are one-of-a-kind and the perfect complement to the beachy atmosphere. Sit outside on their patio and enjoy live music during their summer time patio parties.
Sweet
There aren’t too many places that you can go to take a step back in time just to get something to satisfy your sweet tooth. However, Jackson Candy & Fudge Factory is one of those places. A must-see during your time in Jackson, everything they do there is based on the iconic candy stores from the 1890’s. Even the cash register and scale are authentic!
If you think you’ve had a great doughnut before, your taste buds will be in awe of the doughnuts from Hinkley Bakery! A Michigan favorite, this family owned bakery has been sweeping the doughnut competition since 1913. As soon as you take one bite out of their chocolate croissant or warm doughnut hole, you’ll be hooked along with the rest of the area! Make sure you arrive early (and have cash) because the line frequently wraps around the side of the historic building.
