‘The Invisible War’ viewing and discussion

June 20, 2013 :
Jackson College invites the campus and community to a free screening of the documentary, “The Invisible War,” from 7-10 p.m. Thursday, June 20 in James McDivitt Hall, Room 218, on Central Campus.

From Oscar®- and Emmy®-nominated filmmaker Kirby Dick (“This Film Is Not Yet Rated”; “Twist of Faith”) comes this groundbreaking documentary, an investigation about one of America’s most shameful secrets: the epidemic of rape within the U.S. military. In addition to this being a profoundly timely topic from today’s headlines, this event marks the 10th anniversary of the Jackson-based Real M.E.N.’s Project (Men Embracing Nonviolence) which focuses on men’s role in ending sexual assault and domestic violence. The film paints a startling picture of the extent of the problem — today, a female soldier in combat zones is more likely to be raped by a fellow soldier than killed by enemy fire. The Pentagon estimates there were a staggering 26,000 service members sexually assaulted in 2012.

“Focusing on the powerfully emotional stories of rape victims, “The Invisible War” is a moving indictment of the systemic cover-up of military sex crimes, chronicling the women’s struggles to rebuild their lives and fight for justice. It also features hard-hitting interviews with high-ranking military officials and members of Congress that reveal the perfect storm of conditions that exist for rape in the military, its long-hidden history, and what can be done to bring about much needed change. This film has had significant impact on national policy since its release in January 2012.

Join us after the screening to discuss the film via Skype, will be Gulf War veteran Trina McDonald, one of the brave survivors featured in the movie. Everyone is welcome. Any questions, contact Dani Meier, director of the Center for Student Success, at meierdanii@jccmi.edu.

June 21, 2013 :
Once again, the Fitness Council partners with the GREAT (Grand River Environmental Action Team) for a morning paddle to work. See the city from a whole new perspective as we wind through the quiet backwaters of Jackson and disembark right down town! This is really the most fun you can have getting to work!

GREAT will provide boats, floatation devices and paddles for those who pre-register. You are also welcome to bring your own equipment. This event has limited capacity and fills fast, so contact the Fitness Council to reserve a spot (517.990.9798).

Parking is available at the launch point at the High St. bridge near Dawn Foods. We will start the launch at 7:45am, so try to be there by 7:30am to get outfitted. See the route map here.

Coffee and muffins will be waiting at the end of the paddle. JATA is graciously providing transportation from Consumers Energy campus back to the launch site for those who need to get back to a vehicle.

Jackson Historic Prison Public Tours

June 22, 2013 :
The Historic Prison Tours offers public tours two Saturdays a month. Tours begin at 10 am, and last until 4 pm.

Begin the tour in downtown Jackson at the Michigan Theatre with a brief tour of this historic site. Then, with surround sound and an HD screen, see and hear the fascinating history of Michigan’s First State Prison (1839-1934). Mixing film with live presentations by tour guides, you’ll experience intriguing tales of prison life, colorful inmates, wardens, night-keepers, punishments, and reforms. You will see solitary cells and underground tunnels as the old prison come to life. Journey into the present to what the former prison has become – Armory Arts Village. On screen, visit an artist in his studio, once a cellblock and see an apartment carved out of two floors of 36 cells.

Next: Board the bus to 7-Block (1934-2007), a fully intact, closed cellblock at the Jackson State Correctional Facilities. Here, Robert DeNiro filmed the movie “Stone.” Experience the “cage,” or holding area. Then walk down the ramp that took prisoners from the real world to the one behind bars. Eat lunch at tables where thousands of inmates have downed their prison chow. Step inside a cell. Walk the five tiers of galleries. Go onto the prison yard. Hear of famous/infamous convicts, officers, riots, reforms, and a one-and-only helicopter escape.

After “doing time,” board the bus to ART 634 on the site of the First State Prison. Once the famous Jackson Wagon Company, today ART 634 hosts The Old Prison Gift Shop and Gallery. Browse and buy souvenirs here, featuring art from the Prison Creative Arts Project (PCAP). This original art work is created by artists in Michigan correctional facilities, juvenile facilities, urban high schools, and communities across the state. Also, visit other delightful shops and CUPPA, a cozy coffee café.

SO, DO TIME IN JACKSON! -- AN EXPERIENCE YOU’LL ALWAYS REMEMBER!

Seen on Film at the Historic Michigan Theatre
Experienced with Tour Guides on Live Prison Grounds
	Tales of Famous/Infamous Inmates

The Secrets of Karmic Astrology

June 22, 2013 :
	Cost: $60

	SPACE IS LIMITED

At the exact moment that you were born, the Great Creator Spirit cast a handful of stars into the heavens in a perfect pattern. That pattern weaves a tapestry of your skills, needs and most important life lessons. No two people will manifest their charts the same way, that’s why some Virgos are friendly and some are too self-critical to know how good they are. Around that firm fixed pattern of your Natal Chart, our Zodiac moves in an orderly dance, which illuminates those life lessons, and as they transit, you are tested in different areas of your life. The powerful transits of Saturn in Scorpio and Neptune in Pisces are amping up everyone’s need to find a spiritual tuning fork.

This study of Karmic Astrology, will show you how to understand your Life Lessons, and move gently through your upcoming transits. Each participant in this Astrology Intensive will receive a copy of his/her Natal Chart in an easy to read Report form, a $25 value. See below for details.
While no previous experience is necessary, both beginners and advanced students of Astrology will gain insight from this day spent among the stars. Please be ready to leave your birth date and time information when registering for the generation of the Natal Chart.

Rev L Newman is a 3rd Generation Astrologer and Mystic student. As an ordained Spiritualist Minister and Hospice counselor, she has seen firsthand the effects of Karmic lessons, and how their understanding leads to inner peace. When CBS Radio began their spirituality based programming, they hired her as one of the first On Air Hosts. Today her Program “Answers With the Astral Baglady” is simulcast on CBS Radio’s thesky, paraxradionetwork.com, WOMChd3, WBMX, KJAQ, WDSY, and WZPT, as well as AOL, Yahoo and RDIO.com. As founder and Director of MotherPeace Drum, the Great Bear Society named her a “walks far woman” for her dedication to the Medicine Wheel. NAFE sighted her ability to blend spirituality and humor with the demands of the workplace. In a study of Great Lakes area metaphysicians, the Detroit News said of her, “ If this article were the Freedom Festival Fireworks, Rev Newman would be the Grand Finale.” Her Sun Sign Predictions and Astrological Week at a Glance can be found on CBS Radio’s thesky homepage, paraxradionetwork.com, and motherpeace.net.

Space is limited for this event. A non-refundable deposit of $20 reserves your space, with the final payment due by June 10th. Walk-ins only allowed if space is available, must pay in full, and will receive their Natal Chart approximately one week after the class.

Payment refund less deposit available for registration cancelations before June 10th. Cancelations after June 10th will receive an in-store credit less deposit. The $20 deposit is non-refundable.

Stop in to register or call for more information. Phone: 517-782-2780.

Jackson Trailblazers Community Toastmasters Club Meeting

June 25, 2013 :
Learn to: Lead rather than Manage, Evaluate rather than Criticize, Speak instead of Talk
A good communicator need not neccessarily be a good leader; however, a good leader needs to be a good communicator.

Without strong communication skills people cannot achieve their goals or motivate and persuade others.

	Toastmasters can help!

The Trail Blazers Community Toastmasters is a large and diverse club that provides a friendly, supportive environment in which to learn and keep your skills sharp.

Though members may join for different reasons, all members discover that by develping their communication skills it helps them to gain confidence....confidence to lead.

Yes, we realize that not all people will want to become public speakers or leaders, but most people would love to be able to express their ideas, to speak out for a cause or to think on their feet and do so confidently and coherently.

How do you want to make a difference in this world? Let us help!

Pop by for a visit at St. Pauls Church, 309 S. Jackson, Jackson, MI 49201

Use the back door facing the parking lot across from the YMCA.
