In the mid-1800s, nobody wanted to live in the Armory Arts Village. Although, back then it was Michigan’s First State Prison, so you can’t blame them for not wanting to. 

Today, The Armory Art’s Village is home to creative minds, rather than criminal. Within a 25-foot stone wall, complete with turrets, sits this one-of-a-kind 19-acre residential complex. The residents of these apartments are everything from emerging artists and musicians to designers and craftsmen, you name it – the Armory has it. This Jackson artist community was featured in MSN’s “slideshow of 10 of the world’s most unusual apartments” in 2010. At one point in time, this property was the world's largest walled prison.
