There’s so much to look forward to around the holiday season, the twinkling lights, the cozy movie nights in, or the gift-giving. While you’re making holiday plans this season, don’t forget to make plans to give back this season. It is the season of giving, after all, but what are some ways you can give back that maybe haven’t crossed your mind before?
You’re probably planning on attending, or even hosting some Christmas parties within the next month, and there are bound to be some leftovers. Rather than forgetting about them in the fridge or throwing them away, consider giving them to the Interfaith Shelter, where they will happily be fed to those in need of some holiday cheer. They surely won’t go to waste there.
Have your kids grown out of last year’s winter coats? Or maybe you’re looking for a winter wardrobe refresh? Donate your lightly used coats to the Jackson YMCA by December 17. It’s chilly now, but our coldest months are around the corner. Be sure to shed any layers you won’t be needing this holiday season, and give gloves, mittens, hats, or coats that someone else may need more than you.
If you know you want to give, but aren’t exactly sure where, Wonder and Wander Jackson has started a Secret Santa Society campaign, where they are raising funds to benefit various nonprofits in the community or help those in need throughout the holiday season. This campaign will allow you to benefit more than one person or organization. Plus, the more donations they receive, the more good they can do. All you need to do is pick up your phone (which you’re probably already holding) and Venmo any amount to WonderAndWanderJackson with a Santa emoji to make sure your donation is clear. Check out their website for details or more ways to donate.
It’s possible to give back while getting some perks in return. The Jackson Breakfast Rotary Club recently announced their “Around Town Again” fundraiser. From a purchase of a $20 envelope full of coupons, you can benefit four nonprofits in the area. Each coupon includes deals from restaurants all over Jackson, including some favorites like West Point, Chilango’s, Veritas, and Ogma. Some coupons offer 20% off, others may offer a free dessert. Pick yours up at Marketplace Manna Inc.
Helping hands can be extended to those with paws, too. The Holiday Inn Express is hosting a Doors for Dogs competition, which allows participating groups and businesses to decorate one hotel door with a $20 minimum donation. Those who participate will be entered to win a complimentary jacuzzi suite! Who doesn’t need a staycation during the holidays? OR, offer it to that one family member who would make the house feel a tad cramped when they stay for the holiday. All proceeds will be given to the Jackson County Animal Shelter. Also, be sure to remember, if someone in your family is wishing for a new puppy or kitty under the tree this year, be sure to adopt and not shop, to ensure that even our furry friends have a safe, warm holiday.
