More than Retail at Village Peddler Gift Shoppe
“Village Peddler, encompassing all three owners, makes it 50 years—the longest-running retailer in Brooklyn. The prior owners had it for 23 years. I always wanted to do something like this but got sucked into the mortgage industry and was there for 20 years. It was Witch’s Night Out one day, and we came through here, and the prior owners said to me, ‘Your name came up with someone who might want to buy the shop.’
And it was for sale.
I don’t even know how or why my name was mentioned. Over the years, I had all these ideas—a coffee shop, a bar, and others—all these things I might to do. My husband is self-employed and we had two kids to get through school, so was never the right time.
Then when I saw this place, even though it wasn’t one of my ideas, it just would never leave my mind. I kept going back to it. So we sat down with the owners and looked at the numbers, and my husband said, ‘You know what? I think we could make this one work.’
So we bought it. At first, I had all these ideas of everything I was going to change, Then I sat in the shop and saw all the people coming in, a whole history here of people loving the shop and all the stories they told. I was like, you know, I’m just managing the stores—this really belongs to the town. It’s not for me, it’s for them.
That being said, this place is my baby. I love it. We bought the place in 2015 and I’ve never looked backed. Pam stayed on with me and she loves it as much as I do. We were just talking this morning—we had a couple here from Colorado yesterday. There were some from Texas and California. We’ve had people from Australia this summer. You get to meet people, and I like to hear their stories and all about them.
The community is incredibly supportive. People think summer is our biggest season because of the tourists—summer is great, but Christmas is our biggest month. Everyone is just so supportive and they want us all to thrive.
I just truly feel lucky and blessed to be running a business in Brooklyn, and I wouldn’t want to do it anywhere else. “
