The area is peppered with locations that were key stops on the Underground Railroad. Visit Jackson Station the longest continually operating passenger rail station in the country –to see where so many slaves made their way to the Canadian border.
Your Civil War journey would be incomplete without a visit to Under the Oaks, the very spot where the Republican Party was born on July 6, 1854. That was one of the initial sparks to the Civil War. See the tales of Michigan Civil War history at Ella Sharp Museum’s display of relics from the first volunteer regiment in the state which came from Jackson.
In May 2023, the Jackson Train Depot was added to the National Park Service’s National Underground Railroad Network to Freedom.
