Flowers & Family

“I’ve lived here in Concord my entire life and it’s always been a dream of mine to help revitalize downtown. Growing up, there was a flower shop in town called The Flower Basket. I loved going there and it planted this seed of wanting to work with flowers. Then this building came up for sale. Vintage Roots opened in the summer of 2025.

Growing up, my mom would always say, ‘Seize the moment’. I tend to be a cautious person, so when we bought this place, at first, I thought, ‘Yep, I’m waiting until I retire’. When my husband got on board, he said, ‘No, we’re just going to do it. We’ll learn as we go and the community will support us no matter what.’

And they have.

I’m also a teacher, and I love teaching. I’m a coach. There’s a lot going on in life and my kids are growing up—they’re busy with sports, activities, and work. But I’ve loved opening this business. Every day I meet people I don’t know and it’s been so much fun.

Because I teach, I have my whole family working for me. My mom, my mother-in-law, and my aunt work for me during the day when I’m at school, and then we’re open in the evenings. Anytime the lights are on, come on in! My family has been so supportive and without them, I don’t think I could do this at all. My husband is the brains behind this place. I tell him what I would like it to look like, and he just does it. Besides me helping paint, he has done everything. He redid the bathroom and exposed some bricks for me.

I’ve got two girls, a 20-year-old and a 17-year-old, and they love working here, too. My daughter’s a senior in school, and she’s here two or three days a week working for me. My oldest, when she’s home, she’s here working. My son is 14 and he likes the candy section. He just wants to keep those Reese’s in stock because that’s his favorite part of the business!

One of the main things people come into Vintage Roots for is a special but inexpensive gift. I get a lot of people coming in just needing something quick for their grandma or their aunt or their sister. Customers also come in for flowers. I have flowers always ready in the cooler and customers can just come and pick out anything they want. There are also arrangements and bouquets all the time. I also do custom orders with a website where you can put in inquiries that come right to me.

We’re a new business and the Concord community has been so awesome: friends, family, people from school, and people I’ve never met come in and support me. It’s amazing. Being next door to Trail Head Coffee has been great, too. When this building came up, I was like, ‘Okay, that’s my prime spot—right next to the coffee shop.’ A lot of the ladies who go to the coffee shop in the morning will stop by here and do some shopping, or we’ll collaborate on events together. I love that this community supports everything that I want to do.

I’ve always been a small-town girl. I never wanted to leave. I grew up here, went to school here, I teach here. I just love the small-town vibe. Anytime you need support with anything there’s somebody willing to help, even people you don’t know.

Concord is closely knit and takes things slow. When you come to this small town, you kind of just take a deep breath and say, ‘Okay, I can relax a little bit.’ You might be busy all the time, with lots of things on your plate, but at the same time, you can take a walk with my kids. My kids can go downtown by themselves. I’ve got two drivers right now, and I trust them coming downtown Concord. They have such a close-knit group of friends. I feel like I can breathe when I’m here.

I feel the same way about the business. I just come in here, get to breathe a little, and do something that I love.”
